Studio Laguna feels extremely blessed to have our 2012 wedding season so full at this point in the year. We would like to announce that we will be taking very few Friday weddings this year. We want to be able to handle the amount of weddings we are shooting so we are able to give each couple stellar customer service. So if you have a Friday 2012 wedding, please be sure to talk to us earlier rather than later!
The Art of Boudoir
I just wrapped up ordering some lovely boudoir gifts and started brainstorming about what the next Garters and Lace could look like. Modern? Stark? Romantic? Pin up? It just depends on what the clients are looking for…and here are some good places to start for inspiration!
This collection of images is the perfect example of classic pin up. Even light, monochromatic backdrop, cute poses.
I adore the Guess Fall 2011 campaign. It shows how you can incorporate your partner in the shots and how to be cute, flirty and fun while keeping it classy. This shoot is deliciously 50’s and has a very sexy vibe even while fully clothed and using outdoor spaces. Boudoir doesn’t always have to be limited to a hotel room.
Speaking of outdoors, here are some gorgeous examples of pin up style images on the beach.
Here is a photographer who’s work I really enjoy. This boudoir entry of hers shows how you can use the architecture of a space in boudoir.
I hope that these sites show you how different and unique boudoir can be. How you can be completely clothed and still have sexy shots. How you can inject your personality into the shoot and make it your own. How you can incorporate architecture into your images. Keep checking back on this blog and the Studio Laguna facebook page to find out when the next sessions will be or contact us to set up an appointment!
Winter’s Spoon
John and Sara had their engagement session on Sunday.
Luckily, it hadn’t warmed up yet so we still had snow on the ground and the water was frozen over. Why is it important for the water to be frozen over? Well, the ice gave the lovely couple a way to access the cherry and spoon sculpture so we could get a fun picture =) Fun is a good descriptor to use for this couple, and I had a wonderful time getting to know them better. Here are my favorites, enjoy!
French75 and a Manhattan
Kris and Chrissy had their engagement session today.
These two know how to have fun. They know the secret hotspots in town and it is wonderful to hear about their travel experiences. They also love cocktails and know the names of obscure drinks and alcohols, it is fascinating. So we definitely wanted to do a cosmopolitan engagement shoot that incorporated downtown Minneapolis. Kris even pulled out a fedora for some of the shots, he looked so dashing. But as dashing as Kris was, he couldn’t keep his eyes off of Chrissy, and I loved capturing the looks they gave each other.
Here are my favorites, enjoy!
Heart & Stroke Gala
Yesterday the American Heart Association had their annual Heart and Stroke Gala at The Depot in Minneapolis. Cardiovascular disease kills 870,000 Americans a year, so even with decades of hard work and progress, more still needs to be done. This black tie gala was full of doctors, former patients (one that had had a heart transplant just four months ago!), and friends enjoyed great food, browsed the awesome silent auction items, and were treated to a lovely dinner. The ice rink was covered in a temporary floor, and Live Design Productions combined simplicity with elegance by transforming the room into an all white wonderland.
Here are a couple images to give you an idea of how the night looked. More images will be in Minnesota Monthly soon!
No Place Like Home for the Holidays
I love photographing families in their homes. You get to have their personality show through in their backdrops and can take more personal images. The home I worked at today belonged in a magazine…my interior design brain was so happy!
Joshua, Gabriel and Grace matched the decor perfectly and were so well behaved. Portraits took no time at all since they all had lovely smiles and sat still (such a difference from toddler portraits!). After the formal pictures were done, we headed outside to play in the snow for a couple minutes. I tested out their acting chops and they can do serious faces very well ; ) At the end of the session Joshua gave us a mini concert on the piano, what a sweet family!
Here are my favorite images!
An Atypical First Dance
Are you a couple that enjoys fun but don’t like to have everyone staring at you for too long? Does the idea of turning in a circle to a slow dance while everyone watches make you nervous?
There are many ways to have the special moment of a first dance without it taking three to seven minutes.
One of the easiest things to do is to have the DJ announce halfway through the first dance that it is time for the guests to join the couple on the dance floor. Be sure to prep your wedding party and family a head of time so they know they all better get out there and share the spotlight.
Another option would be to prep your parents that at a certain part of the song, they can come and do the father/daughter and mother/son dance.
You could always do a faster song that is upbeat and fun to take the pressure off of not stepping on each others’ feet.
My favorite option, though (yes, I tend towards the theatrical) is to have a spot in the sweet slow song where the DJ mixes in a loud dance anthem and the crowd flash mobs the dance floor. It doesn’t have to be just the wedding party, it could be a group of fun college mates or the crazy cousins…the trick is to keep it a surprise for the ultimate wow factor. And who knows? Maybe your wedding will be the next YouTube hit!
Boudoir Pictures
I just finished mailing out the batch of disks from our latest Garters and Lace boudoir session that took place last month. It was such a blast! We chose a gorgeous room at the Nicollet Island Inn that had an exposed brick wall and lovely furniture and did a lot of retro style boudoir. The ladies looked amazing because they had their makeup done by Jamie at Brett Dorrian Artistry…they were simply flawless.
But this blog entry isn’t about taking boudoir portraits, it is what to do with them after you get your images back. After investing in outfits, makeup and photography it can be a bit anticlimatic to just give a disk of the images. So, how do you present these gorgeous pictures to your partner? Here are a few ideas, some that cost some money and some that don’t, but all should have a good impact.
Screen Saver – I LOVE this idea. Take your favorite images and put them on your partner’s home computer as the screen saver. So next time they’re using their computer they’ll get quite the surprise. The downside of this is that it might be difficult to be present when the surprise happens, but it is a fun and inexpensive way to present the pictures.
Random Placement – If you’re into surprises, you can leave prints around the house for your partner to find at random. Put a print in a book. Another under the coffee can. Another on their pillow…so on and so on. You can either hide all the pictures at once or one a week or even create a scavenger hunt and when they find the last one, they get a prize (this can be as chaste or…not chaste…as you want it to be, I’m not judging!)
Postcards – One of my favorite boudoir sessions took a lot of pre planning but was spectacular. With numerous retro themed rooms in the client’s house, she designed outfits to match the “sets” and we spent two hours on the session. Afterwards, she found a flat tin box and I designed vintage style postcards to fit inside. We printed 10 different cards and she gave them to her husband. It was a great presentation.
Accordion Booklet – Your photographer has access to pro labs and those labs have some great products. The accordion booklet folds up to just a 3×2.5 size or so, but folds out like a centerfold. The benefit is that you can fit multiple images onto this product and it closes nice and small for discretion. This type of booklet can also be done DIY, but you need access to a printer that can make large prints. Fast Foto in Edina also does accordion booklets and the owner is very sweet and professional.
Magazine Cover – I have designed a couple magazine covers for clients. Take whatever your occupation is and make yourself a cover girl! And you can get really creative with the articles, too.
Large Prints – Whenever I shoot boudoir, I make sure to get some that have more of a fine art feel, especially in black and white. Take one of your images that isn’t so obviously boudoir or use a classic 50’s pinup shot to make a framed piece for your bedroom. Especially if it doesn’t show your face, you can treat the image like any other piece of art you have in your home.
Calendar – I’ve designed a couple calendars. They are a ton of fun. If you’re going to do a calendar, though, it requires some pre planning as you would want to have quite a few different outfits.
Books – When creating a book, you want it to be at least 15 pages, with only one image per page. Find lyrics or poems that mean something to the two of you a scatter the words throughout the book. The books can be sweet or sassy or funny or a mix of all three. It can have extensive graphic design or be simple and clean. My favorite use of a boudoir book is as a present for your partner the night before your wedding. Leave the book wrapped in ribbon for them to find and hand write a note on the first or last page with a lipstick kiss. I have, no kidding, gotten hugs from grooms on the wedding day thanking me for making such a cool gift.
Remember, boudoir isn’t playboy (at least it shouldn’t be). Great boudoir images are going to be classy, gorgeous, show of your personality and be sensual and teasing. Some of my favorite boudoir images are of women in their partner’s favorite t-shirt (Frankie Say Relax!) and knee high socks with a big laugh on their face. That is sexy. Yes, thigh highs and a corset shot with a retro 50’s vibe is what we all picture, but if that isn’t you, then don’t do it. Your partner wants to see you for you, they love you for a reason! So choose your outfits and the presentation of your images with that in mind. And the bonus part of boudoir photography is that, yes, you’re doing this for your partner, but after the session, you realize it is for you as well. The self esteem boost is priceless =)
As a last disclaimer, your boudoir pictures are YOURS. Before you give them to anyone else, make sure you really trust them. Once you give someone else a disk or prints of yourself, or post them on the Internet, they are out of your control. If you plan on running for president someday, keep those pictures under lock and key.
All Smiles
Alaina is such a darling little girl! I’ve been photographing her since she was a brand new baby, and it was fun shooting in her home for her 1 year portraits.
This time, we got Baxter (child number 1) to pose along with her, which is quite a feat. Alaina is all smiles and with those warm brown eyes, she is going to be quite the heartbreaker down the road!

Muddy Paws Holiday Event
This is the 19th year that Tami has hosted a fabulous Holiday Bazaar and Toy/Pet Food Drive at Muddy Paws Cheesecake.
Tami has a very generous heart and obviously loves animals. So I was happy to see her event space packed with people tonight as they sampled cheesecake, listened to live music, donated food and toys, and browsed local, handmade and socially aware products for their holiday shopping.
I was very glad to see Tomforkery was there again this year, he is an artist with such a fabulous product! Howlin Wolf Creations had some lovely Native American and wildlife themed gifts. There was a table of gifts made by Industries, Incorporated. I absolutely love this business which helps adults with disabilities find work. I highly suggest you check out their website! There was also a booth at the event for Bride to Be Consignment…what a great idea! After their wedding, brides can sell their centerpieces, gowns, linens, basically anything and get a bit of a return on their investment. And for the savvy shopper, you can score real deals at this shop. Another wedding vendor, The Traveling Photo Booth, provided entertainment for the guests.
Gifts got edible at the Barkleys Bistro booth. All of their dog treats are hand made and locally sourced. My favorite booth every year is the Heath Glen’s Kitchen display. Each jar of Dorothy’s creations are so delicious! And I love her flavor combinations. Be sure to go on her website and find where you can purchase her “farm-to-jar food”.
In a world of big box black Friday shopping, this Bazaar was the refreshing opposite. Businesses that not only create their own goods, but that support their local community while doing so. Shop small this season and support your local businesses. Thank you to Tami, for hosting such a great event every year!
